Most vehicles built in the last two decades use transponder keys or remote fobs that have to be electronically programmed to your car's immobilizer system, not just cut to shape. A transponder key contains a small chip that communicates with your car's immobilizer; without the correct chip programmed to your vehicle, the engine won't start even if the key physically turns. A key fob adds remote locking, unlocking, and sometimes remote start. A smart key or proximity key goes a step further, letting the car detect the key nearby and unlock or start with a push button. All three require specialized programming equipment that reads and writes to your vehicle's onboard systems — equipment our technicians carry in the field.
If you still have a working key or fob, we may be able to cut and program a spare without needing anything from the dealership. If you've lost every key to the vehicle, we can often still create a new key from scratch using your vehicle's identification number and applicable security procedures, depending on make and model.
